Senate 2008 Guru: Following the Races

Keeping a close eye on developments in the 2008 U.S. Senate races

Sunday Morning Reading

  • Virginia: SSP offers another indication that John Warner is on the retirement track: likely GOP stand-in Rep. Tom Davis raised $623K in Q1, a relatively very large amount for a House race, even a tight one. But it's decent start for a statewide run - at least, it's better than John Warner's notorious $500 for Q1. Meanwhile, Raising Kaine sees Mark Warner talking like someone seeking a national stage, perhaps the U.S. Senate, and reminds us that he still has "more than $1 million in his federal Forward Together" PAC.

  • Kentucky: Cliff Schecter reminds of us Mitch McConnell's corrupt ties to Indicted Ernie Fletcher. Meanwhile, The Enquirer asks "Is McConnell now vulnerable?" and mentions that, in addition to 2003 Lt. Gov. nominee Charlie Owen, former state party chairman Bill Garmer is looking at a possible Senate bid.

  • Texas: Capitol Annex has the first Democrat to announce a run against John Cornyn, "Emil Reichstadt, a Dallas attorney and heretofore unknown political quantity."

  • Arkansas: A Green Party candidate has announced a bid against Senator Mark Pryor, 28-year-old Rebekah Kennedy who got 4.4% in a losing campaign for state Attorney General last year. If an even semi-legitimate Republican enters the race, don't be shocked if Republican interests do all they can to assist the Green Party candidate, hoping to erode Democratic support.

  • New Hampshire: Blue Hampshire looks at Portsmouth Mayor Steve Marchand's impressive rhetoric on the environment, calling environmental protection a "moral issue."

  • I don't know who is tragically funnier: Bill Maher or Alberto Gonzales.

$623k is more than just "decent". Given that the average freshman House Democrat from a competitive district seemed to raise in the $200k-$300k range, doubling that is a huge deal. Davis pretty much is in a class of his own with regards to 1Q fundraising of all the House FEC filings I've seen.

James - I agree completely. I didn't just say it was a "decent" take - I said it was a "decent start for a statewide run" - it's definitely amongst the highest takes for a House member, indicating to me that he's prepping for a Senate bid.
